At the end of the season is it necessary to change the compost in my veg true, or could I just add home made compost, or maybe just remove top 6 inches? I have no where to dispose of spent compost. Having amazing success with it, by the way.

Hi Gillian. No need to take out or replace the soil in the unit each year. You will find the soil decreasing as the year goes on due to the nutrients being removed by the plants. Each winter just top up the Vegtrug with your new compost or buy in some good nutrient rich compost to add to the top of the bed. Envirogrind is particularly good for this purpose. See full answer »

Hi you say that the wood does not need to be treated as it will last approx 10:years but on the instruction leaflet it says to treat the wood every year. Hope you can clarify. Thanks

Hi Moira
The wood is pressure treated at time of manufacture which will give it long life in the garden. The manufacturer is obviously covering themselves to add to the length of life of the product. Certainly i wouldn't bother doing anything year one but if you want to oil the wood each winter it will give it extra life

What vegetables would you suggest for a beginner? Our kids would like us to try carrots and then we’re open to suggestions. Is it too late in the season to get started now? Many thanks Derval

Hi Derval
Certainly not to late. Actually May is probably one of the best months to start. Carrots up the centre are a good idea. Another couple of crops if you like them that are easy and give a great amount of crop back are Beetroot, Kale, Spinach, Chard, Radishes and any of the salads
