Description
Bokashi bins are a great way of making productive use of your kitchen waste - by converting it into a pre-compost mixture that you can use in the garden or add to your compost pile proper.
'Bokashi' is a Japanese horticultural phrase that roughly translates as ‘well fermented organic matter’. The process involves sprinkling Bokashi Bran (a 1kg bag is included in the set) over your kitchen waste. This bran contains billions of beneficial microbes.
In just a few weeks, your organic food remnants will have transformed into some homemade pre-compost (saving you money in the process!). The bokashi bin is a small, compact and odour free pre-composter that can be used indoors.
The kit includes:
2 x Bokashi Buckets
1kg of Bokashi Bran
2 x taps
1 scoop
1 bran tamper.
Dimensions:
H: 37cm. W: 31cm. D: 25.5cm
Bokashi Buckets have a volume of 15 Litres.
They come in a light grey colour, with a dark lid and tap.
What are the main benefits of Bokashi and the bin system?
- Quick and easy to make and use.
- Small, compact and odour free, making it ideal for any kitchen space.
- Helps direct food away from landfill and straight into your garden
- Low process temperature – room temperature.
To make Bokashi, simply:
Place all your unwanted food into the Bokashi Bin.
Between each layer of food you put in the bin, place Bokashi Bran on top of the previous layer.
Pat the material down using a trowel so all the excess air is removed.
The less air the better, so always try and keep the lid shut.
Using the tap at the base of the bin, drain any excess liquid produced as often as possible. This will speed up the decomposing process.
What can I put in a Bokashi bin?
- Food scraps and leftovers such as fruit & vegetables, dairy products, meat & bones and fish.
- Prepared foods such as pizza, burgers, snacks, baked food and cakes.
- Other organic material such as spent flowers or coffee grounds.
What not to put in a Bokashi Bin!
- Bottles and Cans that are plastic, glass or aluminium.
- Packaging such as metal or plastics.
- Other items like tobacco ash, tea bags or pet waste.
