The Hungry Bin is 950mm high with a footprint of 600m x 600m and over all length and breadth of 650mm (it is conical with the top wider than the bottom).
Designed and made in New Zealand, hungry bin is a fast and convenient way to compost your food scraps. In our opinion it is simply the best home composting solution available. In a single day the friendly compost worms will eat their own weight in scraps and process approx 2 kilos of kitchen and garden waste.
If you are into gardening the most exciting part is what you get out the other end. Worm compost or vermicompost is the simply the best compost available. It has been thoroughly broken down by the worms into a highly nutritious, balanced plant feed that can be used anywhere in the garden.
The Hungry bin is a unique design. Traditional wormeries use trays of bedding material which need to be regularly changed and result in a cumbersome and messy process. The Hungry Bin is different. It uses a unique conical design which compresses the compost and encourages the worms to feed at the surface. This means the compost 'brick' harvested from the bottom of the hungry bin is largely free of worms. If there are one or two stragglers they can be placed back in the top of the bin to join their friends.
The conical design also works as a funnel strain moisture from the bin which not only keeps the worms healthy (excessive moisture is a problem with other designs) but produces a highly nutritious liquid plant feed or 'compost tea'. This liquid feed is caught in the drip tray placed below the hungry bin where it can be poured off into a watering can and used around the garden.

5 The Incredible Hungry Bin Worm Composter
Very sturdy construction and fully as described. Easy to start and will have to sait and see whether it is effective. Very expensive but hopefully will worth it for not having to turn compost heap or constantly taking out and restacking heavy trays

This composter can take some weeds and grass etc but it is primarily for kitchen waste. To turn that in to compost. Typically if adding weeds to a compost system it needs to get good heat in to it to kill off the weed seeds. So you might be best looking at a Hotbin or Joraform as both will kill off all weed seeds

Of course but you might be best to put more than one over it. A shed if you have one is also fine

It certainly is. Once you keep the lid on properly rodents are not an issue with it. It is on a frame so very difficult for them to climb and even if they did they wouldn't be able to get in. We have been selling these for a few years now and never had anyone report an issue with rodents

If you dig down a few inches with a trowel or you hand with a glove on you should find the worms. It will be obvious whether they are alive or not. I can send you a copy of the user manual for better use of the product if you like but one should have come with the unit.

To be honest a lot of the coverings that say compostable are but they carry a film in the covering that worms will not digest so it is left as waste at the end of the process. It will break down but it will take quite some time in this composter
