Mypex garden membrane is a weed control fabric. It is very effective in suppressing the growth of weeds by blocking the light they need and only allowing nutrients and water reach the plants. If you just cut an X in the matting where you want to plant through it will fray less. If you try and cut a circle it tends to fray more. However the only way to stop fraying where it has been cut is to burn the edges which some people do

Yes that is what i use it for myself. It keeps the weed seeds off the beds over winter which means a lot less in the new year
