JK400 Joraform Compost Tumbler
We can't believe how quick and efficient this composter is. It composts so fast that you'll struggle to keep it full! It also takes up very little room, fitting easily in a small garden.
Because the JK400 is insulated and raised off the ground, there are no rodent problems or strong smells. You can even add cooked meat and fish waste! It's so well insulated that the internal temperature can reach around 75 degrees centigrade. At that kind of temperature the micro-organisms work so fast that you can almost see the food breaking down before your eyes.
The JK400 is easily rotated by hand due to the centre axel. As fresh waste is added it is brought into direct contact with decaying waste. Along with the side vents on the unit, rotating adds air to the mixture, providing oxygen that is vital for the composting process.
The unit is made with durable, rust-proof galvanised steel panels with added polyethylene plastic insulation.
Two Compartments for Maximum Results
The digester is divided into two compartments. When the first compartment is full (approx. 6 weeks) it is covered with a metal plate (provided). When the second compartment is full the first can be emptied of its finished compost.
Composting
Composting occurs at temperature intervals of +2 to +78C. Different micro-organisms work at different temperature intervals. Higher temperatures give a higher degree of hygienic composting, and are, therefore, more favourable.
With equal moisture distribution and oxygen configuration in the Jora unit, plus with continued addition of waste, the temperature will rise to 65-75C. You don't have to buy a thermometer, as you will see the steam rising from the contents. In fact, it can get too hot to bury your hand in it - should you wish to do so!

4 Decent product but rather complicated to assemble
Once you've got it right, it seems to be a solid, good product. The installation is quite complicated. You will need to refer to their installation video and the installation manual. The screws section in their installation manual is not accurate. They must have changed a couple of screws. What we found out was many plastic screws were not used, but all the other screws (except the screw used to fix the panels to the body has a couple of spare quantities) were with the exact quantity, and you couldn't afford to mistake them or lose them. It took us a couple of hours to assemble the composter (with a couple of reassembles to rectify some mistakes). Quickcrop sent three packages via DPD, all of them were nicely packed with no visual damage. However, there're a couple of dent from the panel corners. This was result from the corners where the part that have no backing and the sheet simply couldn't handle any movement inside the carton. Those corners are weakness points from the design.

5 Joraform Compost Tumbler JK400
We ordered this compost bin for our school where we have a lot of food waste. We have not had it for very long but it is working well and waste is breaking down quickly. I can't see how it would work for food without pellets so would say definitely get some. Not very easy to put together, it took us some time and plenty of choice words but pleased with the result!

You will have plenty of capacity with the JK270. Even with a big garden and chickens it will get through all you need. I have a similar set up along with 2 kids and the JK270 is ample for my needs as it composts very fast

The New Zealand composters are brilliant but slow in winter particularly. A bit like your Dalek composters. Also wood food waste they can attract vermin. The door on the JK400 is actually quite big and to be honest the volume of compost they get through due to the heat is immense. That said there is a lot of filling and emptying but it works fantastically. If it was me i would maybe look at a JK400 in conjunction with a NZ double composter. One the produce comes out of the JK400 it can go in to the first of the NZ composter sides and then can transfer for complete finishing in the other side quite quickly

The JK400 is really for bigger environments like a small cafe or guesthouse etc. The Big Pig JK270 should be plenty for your needs. I have a very similar set up to you with 4 in the house and the JK270 powers through all our needs

That is a good question. Having assembled many of these units, I can tell you that the central divider is not fixed to the outer panels so doesn't offer extra structural integrity but the central spindle does run through the divider so helps share the load with the gable panels. A full composter is heavy so load bearing could be a concern. Also, the 2 chamber system works very efficiently and allows the secondary composting of one chamber meaning you get fully finished compost. In a single chamber system, you will always have an amount of fresh or partially broken down material. The short answer to your question is I think, yes, you could do it but you will sacrifice one of the key advantages of the 2 chamber design.
I hope this helps

Believe it or not it has more materials and due to the bulk of it the transport costs are a lot more as it can't go by standard couriers. A fair question all the same.

Send a photo to our customer service department through the contact page on the website and we can tell you straight away. It is clearly marked on the boxes that it came in. I am not sure if you have looked in the chambers since you filled them but if you have put in the right mix it will have shrunk considerably over the period of a week. I recently started using a JK270 for my family of 4 and large garden and i have filled one side fully 3 times and i am still adding as the heating process in it is breaking down the composted material so fast. But send us the photos and i am happy to call you to discuss if you like

We have our new stock of JK400's coming in to us the last week in September/first week in October. We will be taking pre-orders for them from mid September. This unit takes 15/20 gallons of waste a week which is quite a volume to be honest. It would cost €150 to send it built. I am afraid it is not the cost of building it that is the issue it is the transport as it has to go on a double pallet rather than just 2 courier boxes so the cost of transport is a lot more and i am afraid we can't build on site

Due to the fact that the Joraform gets through compost so quickly over a year it will produce the same amount of compost as a double bay New Zealand composter.
