Joraform Compost Tumbler JK400

In a nutshell....

The Jora Compost Tumbler is a Rotary Composter, also called JK400. It is a fast working composter that can recycle alot of kitchen and garden waste each day. Much faster than other composters, it has a capacity of 14.2 cubic feet.

JK400 Joraform Compost Tumbler

This jora rotary composter is the extra large version. We can't believe how quick and efficient this composter is. It takes up very little room and composts so fast you struggle to keep it full. No rodent problems or strong smells, fits easily in a small garden. You can even add cooked meat and fish waste! The compost digester is like a large mechanical stomach that literally digests the organic matter you feed it. A fully insulated  bin that bolts on to the side of your house, it’s clean, self-contained, and it turns food waste into rich compost faster than the average household can fill it. The Jora compost tumbler is so well insulated that the internal temperature reaches around 75 degrees centigrade. At that kind of temperature the micro-organisms work so fast that you can almost see the food breaking down before your eyes

Composting occurs at temperature intervals of+2 to +78C. Different micro-organisms work at different temperature intervals. Higher temperatures give a higher degree of hygienic composting, and are, therefore, more favourable. With equal moisture distribution and oxygen configuration in the Jora unit, plus with continued addition of waste, the temperature will rise to 65-75C. You don't have to buy a thermometer, as you will see the steam rising from the contents. In fact, it can get too hot to bury your hand in it - should you wish to do so!

Two Compartments for Maximum Results
The digester is divided into two compartments. When the first compartment is full (approx. 6 weeks) it is covered with a metal plate (provided). When the second compartment is full the first can be emptied of its’ finished compost.

We have a busy Bed and Breakfast that has 12/14 people in the busy time. This unit has cut my bills for waste substantially and given me more than enough compost for our new garden that we grow a part of our own food. Anyway whats not to love. Full circle wasste to compost and back to the table

We ordered this compost bin for our school where we have a lot of food waste. We have not had it for very long but it is working well and waste is breaking down quickly. I can't see how it would work for food without pellets so would say definitely get some. Not very easy to put together, it took us some time and plenty of choice words but pleased with the result!

Hi Stephen Believe it or not it has more materials and due to the bulk of it the transport costs are a lot more as it can't go by standard couriers. A fair question all the same. Niall Quickcrop

Hi, I recently purchased the big pig as per your recommendations but it seems way too small for what we need. I'm starting to think that we have had the wrong size sent out to us? If it is that this is the correct size then we could do with a heap of them! The first side was full in a week and the second side full the following week. I've now no room left to compost? How can I know I've been sent the right size and what am I doing wrong that I've both sides full and no room left to compost? Do I have to wait 6-8 weeks for each side to break down? Thinking I probably needed the jk400 at this rate?

Hi Georgina Send a photo to our customer service department through the contact page on the website and we can tell you straight away. It is clearly marked on the boxes that it came in. I am not sure if you have looked in the chambers since you filled them but if you have put in the right mix it will have shrunk considerably over the period of a week. I recently started using a JK270 for my family of 4 and large garden and i have filled one side fully 3 times and i am still adding as the heating process in it is breaking down the composted material so fast. But send us the photos and i am happy to call you to discuss if you like Niall Quickcrop

Hi. I am looking to buy a jotaform compost tumbler but uncertain what size I should buy? Thinking it would be between the big pig or jk400? We are 2 people in the household (so waste from a kitchen if 2 people), we have 4 chickens with waste from their coup to go in and we also have a very big garden (our bungalow sits on half an acre although some of that is a stone driveway). If you can please advise which size you think would be best for us? Plus how big are they physically so we know how big they would be at the side of the house? Thank you!

Hi Georgina You will have plenty of capacity with the JK270. Even with a big garden and chickens it will get through all you need. I have a similar set up along with 2 kids and the JK270 is ample for my needs as it composts very fast Niall Quickcrop

Hi I am looking to buy a Composter but I am not sure of which size would suit me capacity wise When I mean capacity I don’t mean outport I mean the capacity of storage in terms of being put in. So to clarify my question if I have a garden and I am mowing the grass how much grass can I put into the compost or from a standard Lormore bag could I put a whole garden is cut or would I need to consider a larger unit down the 400. Approx garden size is 22m x 11.5 + 19m x 6m Total size approx 370 sqm I don’t have space for a large comparing zone with kids in the garden

Hi Patrick The Joraform 400 with take a lot of waste however when adding in grass you need to be careful to add it in brown waste such as shredded paper, cardboard etc at the same time as adding the grass waste or you will end up with a mix that is very wet and won't generate heat which is what you need to break down the material and make good compost. If you want more information just call me in the office and we will have a chat on this. Regards Niall Quickcrop

how do you rotate the bin? Is there a winding handle you use? And how difficult is it to use? I have back problems are need a composter that is super easy to use.

Hi Noreen. The JK400 compost tumbler has a steel cross piece on one side which is the handle used for rotating the bin. I don't know how severe your back problem is or how much waste you need to process but it may be better to go for a smaller unit like the JK270 or JK125. Please feel free to call me in the office or email me at if I can be of any more assistance.

How do I get compost out ? I have a baby pig and I put stuff into both sides is that right
Answered by Andrew
on March 27th, 2017
Hi Sinead. You remove the compost by opening the hatch and rotating the bin so the material falls out. The method it to use one chamber until it is nearly full before moving on to the next one. You should only be adding material to one chamber at a time, the other should be allowed to fully compost before switching back again.

How do you decide on the best size? There are only two of here but we do produce a lot of compostable waste from the kitchen, from veg plot, flower garden and two acres of which about half is grassed and half woodland we planted 25 years ago. Will the results be anywhere near as good as equivalent up to 70 bags of Envirogrind for the large tumbler!!!

on June 13th, 2016
Hi Ian. Its a very good question. For a household with 2 people with just kitchen waste and a small bit of garden waste the JK125 would be what we would normally recommend however you have a large garden and will obviously be producing a lot of garden waste so it sounds like the JK270 would be your best bet. The JK400 would definately be to large. The great thing about the Joraform composters is that you will continue to produce your own compost in good quantities for years to come. You could buy the compost directly but you will have to do that year in year out. So once you have stomached the cost of the tumbler it continues to pay for itself.
