Protect Your Plants Against The Cabbage Root Fly
Why do my cabbage plants need a cabbage collar?
Cabbage root flies lay eggs on the ground beside your newly planted cabbage or other brassica seedlings. When the eggs hatch the maggots tunnel down and then across to the roots thus destroying your crop.
You know the root fly is to blame if your cabbage plants develop a blue coloured tinge to the leaves, and are tending to wilt in the sun. Young plants will lose their vigour and die while older ones will grow very slowly.
The collar is a traditional, simple and effective solution. It basically prevents the maggots tunneling and therefore saves your plant.
Our cabbage collars are disks of a heavy duty fabric with an opening in the middle to fit around the plant.
How do I use them?
Plant your seedlings as normal and then place the collar around the plant. Make sure the disk has the dark side facing upwards. Give them a good water so the collars bed down into the surrounding soil.
When the plant has reached sufficient size and root fly is no longer a danger the collar can be removed.
