Land cress is also known as American cress and is a tasty and fast growing watercress substitute. It is ready to eat seven or 8 weeks after sowing so is an excellent plant to grow late in the season or over winter undercover. Land cress is suitable as a 'cut and come again' salad as regularly cut plants will continue to provide fresh, new growth.
Sowing Land Cress Seeds
Sow seeds thinly 13mm (0.5in) deep from March to August in rows 15cm (6in) apart. Plants for over wintering can be sown from August to September in rows 30cm (12in) apart.
Likes a cool, moist soil in partial shade. Water plants well, especially when getting established in Spring.
