Vegtrug Wall Hugger Trough Planter

Qty:

In a nutshell....

The wall hugger trough planter is a raised vegetable planter from Vegtrug, it is designed to fit snugly against a wall or fence. It is available in 2 sizes 1m long, and 1.8m long and in a natural or grey wash finish.  See below for more details.

Size

Raised Vegetable Wall Planter

The wall hugger is different from regular vegtrug trough planters as it has one flat side and can be placed flat up against a wall or fence for vertical growing. The wall hugger is ideal for narrow spaces and can be placed anywhere from the polytunnel or greenhouse, to a balcony, patio, or by the back door. The Vegtrug range are easy access and are the perfect height for wheelchair users. The unique V shape allows for deep rooted crops like carrots and parsnips.

The feet of this vegtrug have protective covers to prevent the timber from soaking up water and potentially splitting. A pre-formed and fitted liner is included and can be replaced at a later date if need be. The height of the planter keeps your produce away from slugs and snails and animals. The Vegtrug wall hugger planter is easy to assemble and comes in a neat flat pack kit with full assembly instructions.

Available in natural or wood finish or grey wash.

Wood planters are few and far between online this weather and nowhere to go for them locally. Happy to have found this on google. J.Lyons.

It came in a neat box and went together akay. Delivery took a bit longer than I would like but that's to be expected these days.

Relatively easy to assemble. I like the look of the timber, and the shape of the trug. Placed it in a good sheltered sunny spot (against a south-facing stone wall). USE: a bit of a learning curve or experiment this year. Not sure if I have been using the space to its advantage, as probably overcrowded it with too many types of plant (mangetout, beans, spinach, lettuce, courgettes, strawberries, parsley, mint...). Find, for example, courgette leaves are shading cherry tomatoes too much. (Should have gone for climbing variety of tomato.) One unexpected negative: the level of insect life (that I thought I would be avoiding in a raised bed). WOULD really APPRECIATE more video material on successful use of these things. Better to grow just one or two or three plants in abundance? Also would like to know: for a winter spinach crop (say) should one change the soil?

I live in a terraced house and have a small back yard so this is the perfect sized planter for me. I have planted lettuce, beetroot, carrots, coriander and basil and am watching them grow everyday. However, I'm really glad I had an electric screwdriver to put it together as it would have taken ages otherwise.

Assembly wasn't too torturous but did have 3 screws left over. It hasn't collapsed yet! Found it difficult to see the diagrams and print on the instruction sheet - print was so small. I'm over 70 and my eyesight isn't that great now. Unfortunately I didn't discover the video until after I'd assembled it. I've got plenty of salad stuff growing and the slugs have not discovered how to get in yet. I did staple some sandpaper around the legs but not sure that will deter them. Could the manufacturers include a suitable slug repelling covering on the legs before we buy the kit? Looking forward to planting some winter stuff soon when the salad is finished.

Hi you mention planting plans on your website but I can't find them, would like some idea of how much and what sort of thing I could grow in a 1.8m wall hugger veg trug
Answered by Niall
on March 06th, 2021
Thank you for your enquiry. If you go to the Home page on the website you will see a large tab for Shop and beside it a large tab for Learn. Hit the learn tab and you will find the plans easily enough. You can grow almost anything in a Vegtrug. The deeper crops like carrots, potatoes etc can be grow up the centre and everything else along the sides. There really is very little you can't grow in one Niall Quickcrop

Are there holes at the bottom for drainage?
Answered by Andrew
on July 03rd, 2020
Hi Eadaoin. The Vegtrug comes with a semi permeable liner to allow water to seep through. The timbers in the base of the bed have a slight gap to allow water through which then passes through the liner.

Would I be able to paint the outside of it with wood paint?

You can but there is no need to as the Trugs are already stained. If you are using paint on the outside it might be best to try and get a lead free one.

What kind of wood is it and what is the height of the underneath bit on the 180cm? I'm thinking of using it in the front of the house against the front fence wall and putting recycle bins under it.
Answered by Andrew
on November 23rd, 2016
It is 80cm underneath running as low as 50cm in the very centre. I hope i am explaining that alright. The wood used is a soft treated pine and should easily last 8/10 years in the UK/Irish climate.
Asked By Aurelie Sexon
on May 02nd, 2016
Hi, Is the wood treated with something approved by soil association? Otherwise what is the best liner material not to have the food contaminated with chemicals please? Also how much can we expect to plant in this planter please? Many thanks
Answered by Andrew
on May 03rd, 2016
Hi Aurelie. Thank you for your questions. The wood is treated with Tanalith E which is certified by the Soil Association but they also come with a liner to prevent any of the soil from leaching out of the unit. Each of the sections in the planter will take roughly two herb plants.
