Hi Andrea
I put Tea Bags in mine and they break down very well however you are right about the microplastics. A lot of Tea bag manufacturers are now moving away from microplastics so it might be best to get a brand that doesn't use them and then it is 100% ok to put them in the Joraform as they break down lovely

This is the second JK125 I have had. The present one about 8 to 10 years. In both cases the insulation has worn out, especially the centre divider. Is it possible to get an insulation kit for all the panels and ends as the rest of the unit is in reasonable condition? Both units have given very good service and it seems a pity to throw it away like the first one .

I’m not sure whether to go for little or big pig. I live alone but have a 3 acre garden with plenty of material for composting. I usually would fill a dustbin a week with garden rubbish and 2 small kitchen caddies with food waste. I always have loads of cardboard too from online shopping!
This year I have bought 2 tonne bags of compost, the same of mulch and 10 smaller potting compost bags.
Could you advise please?

Hi Claire
Normally with a house of 1 person i would say the Little Pig would be plenty however with the amount of waste you seem to be producing i would encourage you to go with the JK270 Big Pig. It is better to have the additional composting space than not enough

The metal plate is not something that Joraform supply any longer as the newer version doesn't require it. You may have been looking at an older version a few years back. The new system is a lot more efficient

Answered by Niall
on July 13th, 2020
Hi Alice
The Joraforms will work just as well if left in sunshine or a shed to be honest as it is the internal temperature created by the foam surrounds on the inside that create the heat. It will work year round however it does slow down a little in the depths of the winter. Instead of 6 week turnaround time it will move to 8 to 10 weeks in the depths of winter

Answered by Niall

Hi Chris
Yes in short as the temperatures gets so high in the unit it will be able to deal with them. However if putting Bind weed in i would be tempted to put the compost through two full cycles of the unit just to 100% get rid of them. In truth it might be easier to build a pile for the bind weed and burn it as it is so invasive even the smallest piece left will spread again

The more shredded the paper when it goes in the less likely it is to clump. Once you have the first side three quarters full move on to the 2nd side. It should take the 1st side roughly 4/6 weeks to fully compost for the garden

Hi Katie
The cat a rabbit waste along with the wood pellets will actually work really well in the mix. You will need to make sure to add in plenty or torn up cardboard and paper from the house as well to add brown waste to the mix and in an ideal world some grass clippings as the Nitrogen from these helps create heat in the mix which seriously helps the break down process

Answered by Niall
on August 12th, 2019
Hi Alanna
Fruit flies are not a major issue however if the heat is building up in it you certainly shouldn't have any maggots and definitely not wasps. To get heat back in to the mix you will need to add a small amount of cut grass from your garden and then some torn up cardboard and paper. Turn this and you will see the heat build again. This will kill off any unwanteds in the mix

Hi and thank you for your excellent advice and shop.
We are trying to move toward zero waste as a family of 5, inc 3 kids 12 to 7 yrs and cats. We would like to be able to compost cat litter and can source different types of biodegradable litter, e.g. maize or wood pellet based. We understand there is a risk of parasites not being killed if temperatures in the digester is not hot enough, and so we are inclined not to digest it as we would want to use the compost on a veg garden. Have you any experience of digesting pet litter and can you advise further. One option we would consider is two digesters, one for general garden, one for veg but it's a very significant investment. Also can you really get away with digesting perennial weedings like ragwort or thistle? Which size would you advise for
us? Thanks in advance!
Answered by Niall
on July 23rd, 2019
Hi Cathy
Provided you get the mix right you will get the temperatures easily up to 65/70 degrees in the Joraform and in that case cat litter is not an issue at all. We have plenty of customers using the Joraform and putting in cat litter. You will need the JK270 for the size family you have so i would suggest this will be large enough and you certainly won't need 2

Hi Rebecca
As the Joraforms are very well sealed and insulated putting it in a sunny spot doesn't make a huge amount of difference so no it doesn't need to be put in a sunny spot. We don't supply wall mounting brackets as with the weight of the unit once full it may not be safe so the floor mounted stand is the best way to go

Hi John
The maggots will break down the compost for you however they shouldn't be in it once you build up heat in it. It sounds like you might have either a mix that is to wet or to dry hence the heat is not getting going. We are about to produce an instructional video on how best to get the mix right which will be available in the coming weeks. Hi Frances
It takes time to get used to the mix you are adding but it sounds like you had the mix perfect and then added to much wet material instead of brown material. I wouldn't worry about the balls forming this is just moisture trapped in balls of compost keeping them together. You can break these up once you empty the contents and it is ready for spreading in your garden

Yes it will take both cooked and raw food. As it is off the ground and vermin proof there is no issue there and the heat in it will break down whatever you add to it. It might be best to not put large bones in. Other than that everything is fine to go in from the kitchen and garden

The photos on the website for the Joraform 125 are the actual 125 unit alright and not the 270. It does fit a wheelbarrow underneath it but not a large one so this might be your issue.
