Coir Planter Compost Makes 60 Litres

In a nutshell....

Planter compost made of dehydrated coconut fibre or Coir. This is the best compost for raised beds and planters as it retains more water and also aerates the soil. More info below.

Organic & Peat Free Garden Compost

These handy bales contain compressed coconut fibre or 'coir'. Coir is an excellent seed compost with superior water retention. Importantly it's also peat free. Soak the bale in water and it will expand to a whopping 60 litres of compost!

This planter compost comes in a 4kg bale that expands to make 60 Litres when water is added. It is perfect for growing vegetable plants, young plants love coir based soil and compost as it has better aeration and holds the water better. Haxnicks Premium formula with organic nutrients provides faster growth and healthier plants using organically derived soil constituents including nutrients, trace elements and minerals to provide balanced nutrient retention within the coir. Mycorrhizal fungi enables a greater absorption of nutrients, producing faster growth and increased disease resistance.

Re-hydrating Coir Blocks

Coir Compost is made from compressed coco peat or coconut fibre. The bales have been compressed for easy transport and handling but need to be re constituted by adding water to make a light and fluffy peat free planting medium.

Soak each block individually in a wheelbarrow or other suitable large container. You will need approx 15 litres of water to hydrate each block.

Place the block in a wheelbarrow and fill with approx 10 litres of water, the block will start to expand as it soaks up moisture. When the base of the block starts to crumble invert the block and break apart with your hands. Add the remaining water to any dry areas and allow to soak though.

Continue this process until all the compost is moist and easy to crumble through your fingers.

Adding Nutrients
Remember, just like peat, Coir is a sterile compost base and contains very little nutrients in it's standard form. The organic nutrients added will feed your plants for up to 3 months but after that you will need to add a plant feed to coir peat. We recommend mixing our ‘Seafeed’ pelleted free range poultry and seaweed feed to build a low release compost that will feed your plants for over 3 months. Use 2 scoops of Seamungus per bale of coir peat free compost.
Demanding plants like tomatoes and courgettes will benefit from a further liquid feed when the fruits are forming. Coir holds up to 5 times it’s volume in water so is an excellent compost base for holding nutrients added in liquid feeds.

Using Coir
Coir compost holds moisture very well so doesn't need as much watering as peat based products. The surface of a container may feel dry but an inch below the surface may still be soaked. Less watering is of course an advantage but care must be taken not to over water your plants. If in doubt push your finger below soil level to test for moisture. As a rule of thumb you can probably reduce your watering regime by about half.

I would HIGHLY recommend this product. Mixed with homegrown compost it is absolutely perfect for hanging baskets and pots as it doesn't dry out too quickly. Very economical and very easy to use. I also used it with grass seed on bare patches and within 1 week new growth without the birds eating all the seeds!! Quickcrop was very efficicient and value for money. Delivery was fast and I was notified at every point from purchase. BRAVO Quickcrop.

Good instructions and free jellies :-) ! I haven't grown anything in the potting compost that I made from it yet, so can't comment on that.

This really expands a lot. I put this coir in my all my pots and containers every year and it does the trick nicely. Delivery was sharp and packaging was adequate for my order. I rang up for some advice on an unrelated matter and the customer service was a breath of fresh air.

I've been looking for a source of peat-free compost without plastic sacks. Your coir blocks sound great (and much lighter to transport) but I want to check that they're not wrapped in plastic – the block in the photo is unpackaged. Thanks, Virginia

Hi Virginia We have them loose and in plastic. We are phasing out the plastic wrapping ones so if you are ordering some coir just email quickcrop@gmail.com and we will make sure to dispatch the non plastic wrapped ones to you Niall Quickcrop

Hi Peter Either this or peat are probably the two best bedding mixes for worms Niall Quickcrop

Hi I am considering a raise bed. If I use Coir with your fertiliser would the Coir need replacing every year ?
Answered by Niall
on April 10th, 2019
Hi Lesley No the coir doesn't need to be changed each year however you will need to add additional nutrients to it each winter. Vegetables are hungry crops and will deplete the trug each year. It is easy to add nutrients over the winter by just adding a bag of Envirogrind or Seafeed pellets Niall Quickcrop

I have never grown veg and I am very interested in your raised bed 1.8. How many bags of Coir would it need to fill it ? Would Coir be better than compost ? How often would I need to water the veg ? I have a habit of either over watering potted plants or underwatering. Sorry about all the questions.
Answered by Tony
on April 09th, 2019
Hi, in order to fill a 6'x4'x7" raised bed you will need 7 bags of coir. Coir is a sterile compost base and contains very little nutrient. You will need to add a plant feed to coir peat. We recommend mixing our ‘Seafeed’ pelleted free range poultry and seaweed feed to build a low release compost that will feed your plants for over 3 months. Water your veg daily throughout the growing season, taking a break during wet weather.

Hi, Seamungus has been rebranded and is now sold directly by us as Seafeed.
Asked By Kevin
on April 24th, 2018
Could you fill a raised bed with just coir, or would you need to mix topsoil or compost, and at what kind of ratio?
Answered by Niall
on April 25th, 2018
Hi Kevin You can of course and lots of people do. The only big draw bag is coir has very little nutrients in it however this one has some so you are best to add a high nutrient rich slow release feed such as Seafeed. Not a liquid based one as this doesn't hold in the coir. Other than that it is ideal for raised beds Regards Niall Quickcrop
Asked By Anne Conneally
on April 05th, 2018
If I mix coir with envirogrind in a 50/50 ratio and add a couple of handfuls of poultry pellets to my containers will that feed my tomatoes, cucumbers and strawberries for the season. Also can I add the spent mixture to my raised beds at the end of the season and how much 'good' will be left in it ?
Answered by Niall
on April 06th, 2018
Hi Anne Your plan sounds very good however i would be recommending one third Envirogrind to two thirds coir and then some of the poultry pellets. Tomatoes and cucumbers are very hungry crops. Strawberries not so much however adding the spent compost to your beds is still a good idea as it will bulk them up and will still have nutrients left in it Regards Niall Quickcrop

In a vegtrug 1.8m would you add one of these to the soil? I will be buying bags of soil locally since I don't want to ask for the shipment of 400 litres of soil from the UK (it seems a waste of resources). Thanks in advance, F.

I would buy compost locally as you suggest and add our 'Seafeed' manure and seaweed pellets for extra plant feed.
